In comparison to the Dutch, the Palatines, displaced from Switzerland a generation earlier, were miserably poor. William Penn and the Quakers provided aid to help Mennonite families, who had been stranded in London, to emigrate. Bishop Hans Herr was among them. Today, you can visit the Hans Herr Haus near Lancaster. It’s the oldest surviving homestead in Lancaster County.
