Burials at sea were very common during Atlantic crossings in the 18th century. Among the worst reports was a ship that left Rotterdam with ‘three hundred souls’ and arrived in Philadelphia with fifty. In another report, only 94 of the 254 aboard had survived. The captain and both mates had died, leaving the ship’s carpenter to bring in the vessel
