What is an Amish worship service like? —Janet L.
Amish church service begin with singing. A slow chant type singing where a simple stanza of seven lines takes five minutes to sing. While the congregation sings the ministers leave the room and have a meeting.
After two or three songs the ministers return and the singing will stop at the end of whatever stanza they are on.
One of the ministers will stand and preach for about half an hour. A short prayer follows and then everyone stand while the deacon reads the scripture and shares his thoughts on what he’s reading.
Next comes the main sermon which usually lasts around an hour. At the end who ever delivered the sermon will ask two or three men for their thoughts on what he preached. After they have shared he will get up and speak a few more minutes before praying a long prayer from a little black prayer book.
There’s a short benediction and then a closing song.
