Q. When the Amish women sew their quilt tops together (not the actual quilting) do they do this by hand or do they use pedal sewing machines? My daughter and I just put a twin quilt top together today using a “regular” sewing machine and it has taken many hours, and we have a number more to go. I thought if the Amish do it by hand, what a job it must be!

A. Anne, occasionally a grandmother may choose to make a baby quilt entirely by hand, but that is not the norm. Usually quilt tops will be sewn on treadle sewing machines, which of course, is operated by foot.
