Q: I have read a lot of Amish fiction. It is definitely my favorite fiction genre. Could you explain why in some books the characters will refer to their mothers and fathers by different names, such as: Mamm, Mom, or Mama, and Daed or Papa? Do these differences generally vary by family or by Amish community?
~ Mary Lou Kwiatkowski
A: It varies by family, much like any other family in America. They will use what feels right for them. Other names used for fathers include Dad, Daddy, Pop, and Pap.
