Q: I live in Berlin, Ohio and my family is Amish, but I’ve never heard anyone refer to an English person as an “Englisher.” I’ve talked with other families, and they have never heard of that word either. Is that something that is said in Pennsylvania or Indiana?

A. Most Amish will refer to English people as “English.” The word “Englisher,” as far as I know, has been made popular largely by Amish fiction books. I have heard that some Ohio communities refer to English people as “Yankees.”
