After spending many church services and wonderful times with the Bishop and his wife at their farm near Fredericksburg, I was invited to a wedding at their church.
I was delighted to go, and yet also surprised, since the Amish are a private people, but it seems they appreciated what I had shared with them about my Amish ancestors. They were even kind enough to let me bring along a friend of mine.
The church was nicely decorated, but not overdone. The church was fairly large and filled to the brim. The service was not at all like the wedding I had with my husband, or like any other wedding I had ever been to.
It wasn’t about the people who had come, or the clothes people wore (which were the same clothes as they wore every day). There were no fancy candles or drapery. The pastor spoke beautifully though. It was all focused on God and the commitment of marriage and the responsibility a husband and wife have to one another. Divorce was not an option…period.
After that we all went to a large basement on the church and shared a meal together that was made by the Amish women and was, of course, wonderful.
After the ceremony we went into the small town and enjoyed the Amish stores, restaurants and bakeries. It was truly a wonderful time.
Beth Shriver wrote her first novel in 2002 and a year later it was published. Prior to becoming an author, she was a social worker, but became interested in writing about the Amish when researching her family history when she learned she was related to the Glick families in Europe. She also freelances for local papers in her area, writes columns, devotionals, and novels in a variety of genres in both fiction and nonfiction. Beth visits Amish communities in her area, Ohio, Lancaster and Pennsylvania. When not spending time with her family or friends she helps feed the homeless in South Dallas.
Her latest release, Redemption, is available now.
