One of my favorite places to visit is Holmes County, Ohio. For those of you who are familiar with the Amish, you probably already know that Holmes County is home to roughly 40,000 Amish people. I love the rolling hills, the barns with the green metal roofs, and the darling Alpine Village in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
If you get the opportunity to visit Holmes County, I hope you’ll visit some of my favorite places, like The Gospel Shop on 112th E. Main Street, in Sugarcreek. This small, independent bookstore is run by the nicest couple and is located in the heart of the downtown area. They have an excellent selection of books and greeting cards. But even more importantly, their staff makes you feel so welcome. The last time I signed books there, a whole group of us started talking all about snow rollers. A great time was had by all.
One other place I love to visit is the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Walnut Creek. Of course, I always order pie when I’m there. But one of my favorite dishes is their chicken pot pie. It’s really outstanding.
Finally, no visit to the area would be complete without a visit to the Behalt, which is a ten foot tall, 265-foot long mural in the round. It’s located in Berlin at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center. Not only is the Behalt amazing to see, but there is a large selection of Amish-made goods you can purchase there. The staff is also extremely nice. You wouldn’t believe some of the questions I’ve asked them! They really do know just about everything there is to know about the Amish and the Mennonites in Holmes County.
Already, I’m looking forward to my next visit. I’m definitely ready for another slice of coconut cream pie.
