The Story Behind Seeds of Hope
The idea for Seeds of Hope came to me one day when I was thinking of the farm where my mother and her eight siblings grew up.
My grandparents came here on a boat much like the Titanic and settled down on a farm in Knox, Indiana. As they grew older they told their children that they wanted the youngest son to take over the farm. Since he was the one most interested in the farm and the other siblings weren’t, that was fine with them.
The Amish usually stay in one community for generations and they pass down the farm to one child. I got to wondering what would happen if there was no one for a man to pass it down to. John Byler’s son left the Amish and became part of the Englisch world. And his son, Mark, is a successful attorney in Philadelphia.
Mark has visited his grandfather’s farm for years and loves helping with the harvest. But he’s never thought about taking over the farm.
And then Mark’s professional life is upset by a scandal and he’s told to take a sabbatical. So he returns to the farm and discovers that Miriam, the Amish girl he spent so much time talking to all those summers and who understands him best has grown into a beautiful young woman . . .
I’ve visited Paradise, Pennsylvania, many times and so I set Seeds of Hope, the first in the Harvest of Hope series (Gilead Publishing) there.
I love writing stories of the cultural differences between the Amish and our own culture. So it was fun to write a romance about the challenges Mark and Miriam face as they realize how attracted they are to each other.
I also enjoy writing interlocking stories in a series so I hope readers will look forward to seeing what happens to Mark and Miriam “after the story” in the next book titled Buried Secrets.
Remember that family farm I mentioned at the start of this blog? Well, I became fascinated by the Amish seeing them traveling in their buggies near my grandparents’ farm many years ago, and so it feels like I’ve come full circle writing about these fascinating people who make faith an everyday part of their lives and inspire me to do the same.
I hope you’ll enjoy reading Mark and Miriam’s story in Seeds of Hope.
More about Seeds of Hope:
A heartwarming tale of discovering love right in front of you
Miriam Troyer has had a secret crush on Mark Byler since she was a teenager, but she knows they can never have a relationship: Mark is a big-city attorney and an Englischer. Her Amish community is too far removed from all he knows—and she loves her quiet way of life.
Mark has always loved his visits to his grandfather’s farm, but he’s convinced the Amish life isn’t for him. There’s so much of the world to see and experience, and the excitement of his successful law practice can’t be matched by the slow pace of life found back home in the country.
But when things go wrong and his firm distances itself from him to try to save themselves, Mark finds himself back at his grandfather’s farm. Could life in this simple world be worth living after all? Especially when the teenager he remembers has grown into a woman that could be his future. Suddenly, these two people whose lives seem so far apart may get a chance to really see each other for the first time.
