Q. I think most Amish have at least one midwife to help with deliveries. But are they allowed to go to a hospital if there is a danger to the mother or baby?
~ Connie Saunders
A. Amish mothers are actually allowed to choose where they want to deliver. Most mothers prefer to deliver their babies in a peaceful home setting with a midwife they trust. The cost of having a baby at a hospital also helps moms make the choice to deliver at home. Others (most often first-time moms) will choose to have the baby at a hospital. In addition to that, Amish moms also have the option of going to a birthing center, which provide a homey feel, but are often more equipped to handle complications that should arise during birth.
