Keep everyone you know warm and cozy this winter with a cute jar of chai spice mix. It’s been proven that chai improves the digestion system, but also enhances the immune system, fights inflammation and has antioxidant properties.
Chai Tea Kit
2 Tbsp green cardamom pods
4 whole star anise
6 3-inch cinnamon sticks
1 Tbsp fennel seeds
2 tsp. whole cloves
2 tsp. whole black peppercorns
2 tsp. coriander seeds
1/2 cup chopped candied ginger
1 1/2 cups loose black tea
17-oz. clamp jar (if given as gifts, use 5 4-oz. jars)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Split the cardamom pods open lengthwise with a sharp paring knife, exposing the seeds. Spread out cardamom, star anise, cinnamon, fennel, cloves, peppercorns, and coriander in one even layer on a small baking sheet. Toast the spices in the oven for 5-10 minutes. After cooling, move the toasted spices to a sealable plastic bag and use a rolling pin to crush them into small pieces, making the contents small enough to fit inside a fillable tea bag or mesh tea ball. Use a mortar and pestle if you are having difficulty with the rolling pin. Mix together the spices, chopped ginger, and black tea in a bowl and transfer to a jar for storage or gifting.
Makes about 2 1/2 cups (about 40 prepared cups) of tea.
1-2 tablespoons chai spice mix
1 cup boiling water
1/4 cup hot milk
honey or sugar to taste
Fill a tea bag or mesh tea ball with 1-2 tablespoons of chai spice mix. Steep tea in 1 cup boiling water for about 5 minutes. Remove tea bag and add 1/4 cup hot milk, heated in the microwave or in a small saucepan. Stir in honey or sugar to taste.
Tip: If you are looking for gift ideas, package the tea mixture with a mesh tea ball or fillable tea bags. Don’t forget to add a hang tag with the brewing instructions.
