I’m thrilled my novella, Love Birds, is included in An Amish Market, which is an anthology featuring stories by Kathleen Fuller, Kelly Irvin, and Vannetta Chapman. In An Amish Market, you’ll have the opportunity to spend time in quaint Amish shops.
In Love Birds, I had the opportunity to tell the story of Ellie Lapp, who is a minor character in my book The Forgotten Recipe, the first in my new Amish Heirloom series. At the beginning of The Forgotten Recipe, Ellie’s older brother, Seth, has died in an accident. His death is the catalyst, or the inciting incident, for the book. The story centers around Veronica Fisher, who was engaged to Seth at the time of his death.
In Love Birds, I continue the story of Ellie and her mother dealing with Seth’s death. Not only are Ellie and her mother mourning Seth, but they are also dealing the repercussions of the loss of his income. Since Seth’s paychecks covered their day-to-day expenses, they are struggling to buy groceries.
In order to help her mother, Ellie starts working at one of the gift shops in town. Seth’s friend Lloyd Blank frequently visits Ellie and her mother in order to help with chores on their farm. Ellie discovers Lloyd is talented at carving wooden birds, but his father disapproves of the hobby and expects him to take over the family farm someday. Ellie sees the beauty in Lloyd’s creations and insists Lloyd sell the birds in the gift shop where she works. As Ellie and Lloyd spend more time together, they begin to develop feelings for one another, but she accidentally betrays his trust. This betrayal may lead to her losing any hope of a future with him.
When I plan out my books, I always look for an actor or actress who fits my mental picture of my characters. I download photos of the actors and use them as my mental models as I plan the story out in my head. Sometimes I stare at the photos and try to imagine the actors in the scenes. It helps me bring the characters to life in my mind as I’m typing on my MacBook.
When I was searching for photos of actors to represent Ellie, I came upon photos of AJ Michalka, an actress and singer who may be best known for her role as Lainey Lewis on the television show “The Goldbergs.” She best fit my image of Ellie with her pretty blonde hair and smile.
As for Lloyd, I see him as Grant Gustin from the television show “The Flash,” since Lloyd is tall and has dark hair and blue eyes.
I hope you enjoy An Amish Market and I also hope you enjoy getting to know Ellie and Lloyd.
