In looking for a recipe for “Amish Friendship Bread,” several questions arose. First, these beads using “starters” which are then given to friends seem wasteful. In short order, the entire community would have the starter and you’d have to throw the excess out. That doesn’t seem like an Amish trend that would take hold. So are these recipes rooted in Amish tradition at all?
Second, many of the recipes call for powdered pudding mix. This got me wondering, the bread recipe aside, do Amish women ever use store-bought mixes such as cake mixes? I live close enough to Amish communities that I see them in the store on occasion, but I pay little attention to other folks’ purchases. ~Katie Short
Friendship Bread is not a popular thing among the Amish at all.
Instant pudding mix is something most Amish women will keep on hand and maybe a cake mix or two. You never know when unexpected guests might be dropping by and you need a quick dessert.
