One of my favorite parts of visiting Amish country is knowing that I’m going to learn something new-to-me during each and every visit. And, very often, that little gem finds its way into the latest book in my Amish Mystery series.
Such was the case during one of my research trips to Lancaster County when I stumbled across the fact that many buggy horses were once racehorses…
That’s right, the Amish often purchase Standardbred racehorses (trotters) to pull their buggies. It’s a practice that makes a lot of sense considering trotters are trained to pull a sulky with speed and efficiency.
Armed with that knowledge, I focused the remainder of my visit on the Amish and their horses. By doing that, I learned that Amish children learn to drive a horse and buggy by practicing with a cart (often containing their younger siblings). And when the Amish purchase a horse for buggy-pulling purposes, they take it for a test drive in much the same way we test drive a car.
Fun stuff, yes?
By the time I was headed home from that particular trip, a plot line for my next book was brewing in my head—a plot line that touched just about every single Amish character in my fictional town of Heavenly, Pennsylvania. Suddenly I had Amish homes being robbed, an Amish father dead in his barn, an entire town on edge, and Detective Jakob Fisher (once Amish, himself) at a complete loss for answers.
A Churn for the Worse is that story.
