Q. How does an Amish family move cross-country? Do they take everything with them or do they have to only take essentials and start all over again?
~ Tonja Saylor
A. When an Amish family moves across the country they typically will hire a tractor trailer, usually from a small, local trucking company to transport all of their earthly possessions. The entire community will come to help them load all of their belongings, enjoy a farewell meal together, and try to give them a cheerful send-off with many blessings and well-wishes for their new home. Most of the family will travel in a van and try to arrive a little ahead of the truck that’s hauling their things. Often, the man of the house or teen boys will ride along in the semi-truck. When they arrive at their new home, their new community will come to help unload the truck and get everything in place.
