Q. How easy is it to transition from Deutsch to English when speaking and thinking? Which language do Amish dream in?
~ Gloria Johnson
A. Thinking is fairly seamless and you never struggle to think in a specific language. When speaking English, there are times when you have to try to find a word that accurately depicts what you’re trying to say. Some Amish words simply don’t have an exact English word to match. As for dreams, they come in every shape and size, and are mostly pictures. But if there are words in a dream, those words would most likely be in whichever language is dominant or what you would call your “first language.”
