I am convinced that one of the most scenic pastoral settings in America is Sugarcreek, Ohio. Nicknamed “Little Switzerland of Ohio,” this quaint village tucked away in Tuscarawas County, and sitting at the edge of Holmes County, has plenty to see and do.
The John S. Yoder home, built in 1869, is open to visitors, and the Alpine Hills Historical Museum will give you an understanding of some of the Swiss, German, and Amish heritage so rich in the area. You’ll also want to see (and hear) the World’s largest Cuckoo clock, located on the square in downtown Sugarcreek. At 23-feet tall and 24-feet wide, it’s hard to miss. So there’s no excuse for any school children to be late with that cuckoo bird appearing every half hour, along with dancers and polka music, to announce the time.
If you enjoy live theater, I’m thrilled to announce that from August to mid-December, the Ohio Star Theater at Dutch Valley, located at the beautiful Carlisle Inn, will present Josiah for President, the Musical. Based on my novel of the same name, the musical has received overwhelming response from audiences in Shipshewana, Indiana and Bird in Hand, Pennsylvania. It is produced by the same team that brought you Beverly Lewis’ The Confession Musical, as well as Wanda Brunstetter’s Half-Stitched (Producer Dan Posthuma, Director/Composer Wally Nason, and Playwright/Librettist, Martha Bolton)
Opening 2016 will be The Home Game, another production by the Blue Gate Musicals team. Be sure to watch for performance dates and times.
Nearby you’ll also find the original Bob Evans farm. Serving as the company museum and historical center, the Bob Evans Farm was once a stagecoach stop and an inn for weary travelers who needed a rest. Bob Evans lived at the farm for twenty years.
“Behalt” is the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center, where you’ll learn about the history and culture of the Amish and Mennonite communities.
The Farm at Walnut Creek has exotic animals, and in nearby Dover (about eleven miles away), you can visit the Auman Museum of Radio and Television, with hundreds of antique TVs (over 600 to be exact) dating back to the 1930-1950s. You’ll want to catch David Warther carving wood, and maybe take in a trolley ride down Main Street.
If gas pumps are your thing, there is even an American Gas Pump Heaven in neighboring Dover. (Considering the amount of money we’ve all paid at gas pumps over the years, we might as well pay our old friends a visit, right?)
As if that’s not enough, you can top of your visit with something truly unique to talk about to all your friends back home– the Famous Endings Funeral Collections. Holding the distinction of being the “largest known collection of memorabilia from funerals and memorial events,” this is certainly something you won’t find in any other tourist areas. The exhibit includes items of interest from the services of departed celebrities, politicians, royalty, and others of note. One such item on display is the guest list dictated by Joe DiMaggio for Marilyn Monroe’s 1962 memorial service.
And all you sports fans can’t be in the area without driving over to nearby Canton, Ohio to take in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
See, with all the museums, shows, hotels, and restaurants available in the area, not to mention the Amish culture, the Sugarcreek community and neighboring towns will have you coming back again and again! Like the name implies – Sugarcreek is sweet!
