Supposedly, no more than two persons were assigned to one bed on the ship, but that was almost never held to. Profit-hungry shipowners and captains were known to assign up to as many as ten to bed. Moreover, these beds were more like a box, 18 x 30, set in rows, side-by-side, and stacked to the ceiling.
