Being a Woman
Can women in Amish communities ever do carpentry work if they wanted? What if they wanted to participate in the building part of barn raising? What would happen if an Amish woman wanted to reject her gender role? —Carol A.
Why would she want to reject her gender role? Being a woman is an honor and a role most will not have a problem with embracing. You won’t find a woman wanting to be doing all the hard labor involved in barn raisings, and doing it in a dress, well, they’re happy to cook, visit, take care of the children, and watch the men take care of the raising of a barn. Now if they’re at home with only their husband and children around they won’t mind helping with whatever their husbands need a helping hand with.
