Welcome to Sugarcreek, the “Little Switzerland of Ohio.” Home of the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock and, in my humble opinion, the top place to indulge in the very best cream sticks and other assorted pastries. Rolling hillsides, lush green fields, and the sound of horses clip clopping down the road make Sugarcreek a truly wonderful place to visit.
I recently posted a picture on Facebook and a reader replied saying that she didn’t realize that Sugarcreek was a real place. Yes, it’s real! I am sure you all have read about the little town tucked away in Ohio’s Amish Country and since my motto is Destination Amish . . . A place where books come to life . . . .I am taking you, the reader, on a tour of my town. A virtual tour with no travel expenses!
World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock . . . say what? Yep, sure is and it is fully functional. How neat is a giant cuckoo clock?
This is one of my favorite farms in all of Amish Country. Just look at that green grass! The view from the top windows has to be breathtaking.
If you read Amish fiction then you know what The Budget is. Usually “Daed” is sitting in his easy chair reading a copy the paper. You don’t have to be a resident of Sugarcreek to get your hands on a copy of The Budget. There is a National Edition which you can subscribe to through their website.
The Alpine Hills Museum has three floors of displays. They have a replica of an Amish kitchen and a cheese house, plus tons of other neat things to see. The Visitor Center is also located here and admission is free. (Donations are greatly appreciated).
This is the reason I go to The Swiss Festival . . . donuts! The festival is held every year and the streets are lined with delicious food and fun carnival rides. Serena Miller’s book, Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio, was recently made into a movie and was filmed right here in Sugarcreek. There is a scene that took place during the festival. I wonder if the actors tried the donuts?
Beachy’s Country Chalet is one of my favorite restaurants. Charming and quaint is how I would describe the inside of Beachy’s. They feature Amish and Swiss entrees. You can order everything from fried chicken to Wienerschnitzel. Make sure to save room for pie!
I love this greenhouse although it’s technically on the outskirts of Sugarcreek. It’s right on the County line of Baltic. Hence the name: Countyline Greenhouse. I bought a lot of plants here last year and the Amish owner patiently answered all of my gardening questions. And I do mean all . . . I asked many.
The Carlisle Inn is the perfect place to stay or visit for the day. They offer live theater and located next door is Dutch Valley Restaurant and Bakery. (YUM)
And finally this is a sunset that you will most likely see if you visit. The sky is a blank canvas painted with a gorgeous array of colors each and every night. Simply put . . . Sugarcreek is beautiful.
I hope you enjoyed my little tour! Have you ever visited a town that you have read about in a book?
Michelle Dawn is a coffee-addicted, donut-loving gal who enjoys all things Amish. When she is not immersing herself in the latest Amish fiction read, you can find her and her awesome hubby with their equally wonderful kiddos eating their way through Ohio’s Amish country. She started Destination Amish with two goals in mind: to share her love of Amish country and spread the word about Amish fiction. Destination Amish has become a popular place for many authors to visit and is known for really fabulous giveaways. Working with the motto Destination Amish…a place where books come to life…Michelle brings the pages of your favorite books to life through pictures and ramblings about consuming vast amounts of Amish pastries.
