My new novel, An Amish Man of Ice Mountain, is an adult Amish fiction book, but the main point of the story centers around the truth that God can redeem our broken pasts and create something new and wonderful through His love. The Amish man of the title, Joseph, although battle scarred himself, has an incredible empathy and tenderness about him. One reader called him “as faithful as a big Labrador,” and I have to agree. The woman he falls in love with, Priscilla, learns her own resiliency through God’s love despite a past filled with abuse.
I wanted to write this story because I know personally that people are usually wounded in some way or another by the bruises of this world. Some are angry, filled with bitterness, stuck on revenge, or filled with hate. In fact, this represents all of us at times, but for this book, I especially wanted to focus on the fact that time is not linear for God. In other words, God has access to our hurt pasts, and even when we do not have the power to go back—He can. He can turn a painful past into something new by reshaping it, healing it, and turning it around. In fact, in the Bible, He says “Behold, I make all things new.” And I think the Amish, with their strong connection to the renewing seasons of the land, can understand this newness and possibility as Joseph certainly does.
And to clarify something: some have asked why I’ve included more adult content in this book and its series…I felt led to develop a story that was as true to life as possible. So some themes and images are not meant for younger readers, or maybe even readers who do not prefer this style of writing. I always want to take the opportunity to let readers know what to expect! So please be prepared for Joseph’s bruder, Edward, who is the broken hero of the next Ice Mountain novel, The Amish Heart of Ice Mountain—due out in November, 2015.
