Lancaster County, PA, is one of my most favorite places to visit! Not only do I enjoy seeing my Amish friends, but I also enjoy visiting the innkeepers at my favorite place to stay, The Creekside Inn.
I first stayed at The Creekside Inn in 2009 when my editor Sue Brower and I decided to take a trip to Amish Country together. The Creekside Inn is located in the heart of Amish Country, just minutes from my favorite shops in Bird-in-Hand and Paradise, which are the settings for my Kauffman Amish Bakery series and Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series.
The comfortable 1781 inn is peacefully situated on 2 acres of an original William Penn land grant, along the Pequea Creek in the Village of Paradise.
I’m always inspired to write when I stay at the inn since I can spot horses and buggies passing by throughout the day and also hear them late at night. The beautiful rooms are filled with antiques and Amish Quilts. Sue and I brainstormed the story for my novella A Plain & Simple Christmas during our first visit at the inn while staying in the adjoining Cameo and Mill Rooms.
More recently, I completed my edits for my book A Simple Prayer, which is the last in my Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series, while staying the beautiful Witmer Room. Not only was the room comfortable, but lounging on the Amish Lone Star quilt gave me extra inspiration.
The innkeepers, Cathy and Dennis Zimmermann, make the stay even more enjoyable with their delicious meals and stories about their Amish friends. Their stories have inspired my books in many ways. In fact, Cathy’s story of walking through the snow to attend the Christmas program at an Amish schoolhouse was the inspiration for a scene in my novella Naomi’s Gift.
Cathy and Dennis are wonderful experts when it comes to what to see and where to visit in Amish Country. They provide a helpful map of the area and point out the best places for a touristy experience and also a more local flavor.
The breakfasts that Cathy and Dennis serve are delectable! My favorites include Cathy’s homemade English Muffin Bread and the homemade coffee cakes. I also enjoy their warm pears poached in cranberry sauce and local sausage, along with their egg casseroles and homemade strawberry jam.
I can’t wait to go back to Amish Country to visit my Amish friend, and I look forward to seeing Cathy and Dennis while I stay at the Creekside Inn.
