Lancaster County, PA, is one of my most favorite places to visit! Not only do I enjoy seeing my Amish friends, but I also have a list of places to see each time I go there.

The Bird-in-Hand Bake Shop is my absolute favorite places to go, and it’s usually my first stop. Not only is the food delicious, but it was my inspiration for my Kauffman Amish Bakery series. At the Bake Shop, you’ll find a wide assortment of homemade goodies, such as cookies, cakes, whoopie pies, and breads.
I once brought home a container of sprinkles, telling my sons that they were Amish sprinkles. My boys are still convinced that Amish sprinkles are the best, and it always makes me smile that sprinkles are on the top of their wish lists when I visit Amish country.
The Bake Shop also has a vast gift shop, including souvenirs such as dolls, framed art, and T-shirts. Outside there’s a petting zoo for the children, and, if you’re fortunate, you’ll find a pretzel cart parked there as well.

Another great place to shop is the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market, where you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade bread and baked goods, meats and cheeses, canned goods, soft pretzels, funnel cakes, fudge, candy, and quilts. The stores feature candles, furniture, and homemade crafts. The Farmers Market is featured my book A Place of Peace, which is part of my Kauffman Amish Bakery series, and also in my Christmas novella Naomi’s Gift. In those stories, Naomi, one of the main characters, sells her quilts there.

Just down the road from the Farmers Market you’ll see the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord. My family and I enjoy eating here, and I highly recommend the hamloaf.
If you take a side road, you’re bound to see Amish farms. You’ll know it’s an Amish farm if you spot the green shades in the windows, the familiar clothing on the lines, and, of course, the buggies. Below are photos I’ve shot during my visits. I enjoy riding in the passenger seat, so I can snap away while we drive past the gorgeous farms.
If you look closely, you may even spot a one-room Amish school house.
You also will see buggies, carts, and Amish folks all around.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Enjoy the food, shopping, and the sights!
