Today I’d like to tell you about one of my favorite locations, Shipshewana, Indiana.
Once again I’ve chosen Shipshewana as the location for my latest release, a novella titled Where Healing Blooms. Have you ever been there? When my editor first asked me to write about Shipshewana, I’d never heard of the place. I had to look it up on Google maps and then begin researching it. Later that year, I visited, and I’ve been hooked since, returning many times to visit friends, participate in the Christmas parade, and sign books.
The town is located in northeastern, Indiana. You can read about it here or here. It’s a small town with just 600 residents (about half Amish, half Englisch). One thing that makes Shipshewana famous is its outdoor market. It’s held every Tuesday and Wednesday from May to October. On market days, the population swells to 35,000. That’s a lot of folks!
So what is there to do in Shipshewana? Lots. The things I’ve enjoyed most are:
- Walking around the market
- Watching a show at the Bluegate
- Taking a buggy tour
- Eating dinner in an Amish home
- Visiting the Menno-Hof museum
- Shopping at Lolly’s Fabrics in Davis Mercantile
You can find information on all of these things here.
By far one of my favorite things to do while in Shipshewana is driving around and looking at the Amish gardens. This is where I first conceived the idea of my heroine, Emma, in Where Healing Blooms. The gardens are real things of beauty. You can also get a map of the Quilt Garden Trail and visit as many gardens as you have time to see. Or you can take a walk down the Pumpkinvine Trail which borders many Amish farms.
Whatever you decide to do while you’re in the area, remember to slow down and enjoy the plain and simple life.
